Well, it sounds like a good plan. But I'm not going to tell you it will
work as I've never tried it or heard that it's possible and I've been
fooled by what the parts book seems to imply about interchangability
before. Looking at the Scout parts book, it looks like the you should be
able to just swap the mainshaft AND the T/C adapter from the 4x4 for the
mainshaft and the mainshaft bearing retainer from the 4x2. Don't forget
about the T/C adapter.

But I also notice the gears on the mainshaft are different too (which I
would expect because of the different ratios) which leaves a possibility
that the inner diameters or splines could be different, although I
wouldn't expect that as it would seem that 3 or 4 different M/S's would
be required for all the 4x4/4x2/Wide/Close combinations if there were a
difference. It therefore seems likely it will work.. Perhaps someone on
the digest has tried this swap and can tell us for sure. And if the
truck M/S is different than the 2WD Scout's as your messages seems to
say, I'd suggest that the truck version may have a longer tail housing
requiring a longer shaft, but again I haven't compared them.

If it doesn't work, look at how much you will have learned about
transmissions by the time you get them put back together again!
