Just a quick note to say that I've posted a photo in the FAQ of the engine
block ID "pad" at:

I know that some folks have had a hard time finding it from the
descriptions that have been in various digest postings.  A few other visual
ID tips as well, to aid in differentiating a V-304 from a V-345, for
example.
