Alternator Woes...

"lynx@domain.elided" <lynx@domain.elided> scribbled in the sand:

I just went through this 3 months ago with my 75 Scout (AKA "Kemo Sabe"). When I replaced/upgraded my old alternator I didn't realize that the old one was externally regulated. All you need to do is unplug the ext. regulator, jumper the 4 wires to one another (wire position #1 jumpers to wire position #3; wire position #2 jumpers to wire position #4). I chased this intermittent problem all over before figuring it out, tried the loose wire theory until early one morning I noticed the headlights pulsing in time to the swinging of the ammeter.  I'm not sure if it was a failed ext. regulator or that they cause problems with internally reg. units. Soon as I took it out all my woes went away. Haven't had a problem since, man how I love my (trusty) Scout!

Carpe Diem!
