Also: I have a holley two barrel carburetor and lately I've been getting

I spent $11.99 on a rebuild kit from (egads) Autozone and it helped to clear
up the problems you're describing.  I also had to 'adjust' the accelerator
pump (is that the right term?) linkage to get the fuel to pump into my carb
quickly enough.
