E46 ventilation

Hi,

Yes, this is a dumb question, except that I can't figure out the answer 
from the too-brief description in the manual.

How can I have a cool stream of outside air blowing on my face while 
driving, without using the fan? Can I adjust the three ventilation wheels 
in the center of the dash to do that. I don't even know whether the I and 0 
symbols mean open/closed or closed/open; the manual seems to assume that 
those symbols are universal.
