Fuel level sensor malfunction

I recently refilled my gas tank because the low fuel light was on and the
range indicated 42 miles.  After filling, the gauge is still on empty, the
light is on, and the range remains 42 miles.  20 miles later, its the same. I
think I recall discussion about problems with the fuel level sending unit and
a way of possibly resetting it. If so, I'd like to avoid replacing the unit.
