Check your fuel pump.  I had the same problem in my first 325 (88). It would 
start and run fine then, strand me for a few hours. Finally it refused to 
start for good at the autoparts store, and after I had it towed to my house I 
tested the fuel pump with an ohm meter. One new pump and filter later it ran 
great until it was totaled.
