RE: E30 Rear Shock Replacement Guide

I would add a couple things to Alex's Rear Shock Replacement Guide. When
replacing the rear upper shock mounts, make sure to replace the gaskets as
well (sometimes the new mounts do not come with the gaskets) and if the
rubber boots on the top of the shocks and shock mount are torn, replace
them as well, as some water can work its way up the shock's threads and
into the trunk  if these rubber boots are missing or damaged.

Another little thing I do is to apply a small amount of silicone gasket
material to 1 side only of the shock mount gaskets before installing, a
small amount of silicone gasket material to the threads of the shock mount
itself and a small amount of silicone gasket material around the bottom
edge of the rubber boot before installing.  A small amount will further
seal the area from water, but also not make it impossible to remove the
parts the next time the shocks need to be changed out.  Use a torque wrench
to tighten all fasteners.  And lastly, on the rear, it isn't necessary to
raise the car.  There generally is enough room to slide in under the car
and remove the lower shock bolt (unless the car has been lowered from stock
height), BUT if you do jack the rear of the car up on the differential
housing, before sliding in under the car MAKE SURE THAT YOU SUPPORT THE CAR
WITH JACK STANDS.  The jack stands can be placed at the edge of the
sub-frame out near the factory jack points in the rear.  NEVER WORK NEAR OR
UNDER A CAR THAT IS SUPPORTED ONLY BY A JACK!  The life or limb you save my
well be your own.
