Don't rip your trunk apart!
The top of the shocks are reached through two small rectangular openings
within the boot cover. Start the process of putting down the convertible
top. Prop the top up and you will see in the bottom of the boot
compartment the two openings with a rubber insert. Remove the rubber
insert. I would replace the upper shock mount as well as the shock.

1. Pull the rear trunk lining to get access to the rear shock mounts.
This
is the single longest and most PITA step. You can do this days or
weeks in
advance. Consider installing GC RSMs (www.ground-control.com) to skip
this
step in the future. They allow you to unbolt the shock from the mount
from
inside the wheel well.
2. Raise the rear of the car (jack under the rear diff carrier).
3. Unbolt the shock from the wheel hub (17 or 19 mm bolt).
4. Unbolt the shock from the rear shock mount (RSM) from inside the
trunk.
5. Remove and replace the RSM if it has more than 30K miles on it.
6. Remove and swap the shocks. Now go through steps 4->1 in reverse
order.
With GC RSMs, second time around the whole process should take about
10
minutes per side.
