I've got an Eta - but a disclaimer is in order: I'm suffering from convert
syndrome - this is my first BMW, and I'm truly in love, and it's been a
while since I felt that way about a car.

Can't wait to try one of these...I'm planning on getting into some
auto-crossing this coming year, and I'd like to get some proper
training...

This I can speak to. I bought a chip from a guy on the e30.net bulletin
board, and have been quite happy with it. It alters the gas/timing map.
There is a supposed 15HP gain, and I'd say that's real, in a
seat-of-the-pants way. However, the downside is the requirement for 93
octane gas to make up for the timing advance (you get a lot of ping
otherwise), and the car sounds a little lean/pingy when you push the
engine. I do not wind the car up normally, so the rev limit increase just
wasn't that important to me. I'd recommend upgrading to the i head (and
more importantly, springs) if you're going to work in that band.
