Pieter,
Had a rattling sound coming from the front on my 94 325is.
Turned out to be the idler pulley for the A/C belts. Note
that noise only was heard when the A/C was engaged. Changed
out the idler pulleys and the noise went away for about 6
months and started coming back. I have a friend who has had
the same problem with a 97 328i. The idler pulleys check
good when they are out of the car, but seem to sensitive to
the slightest wear. Hope it's as simple as this.
