I'm not entirely sure which component you are describing.
IIRC, there is nothing upstream from the fuel filter on either my E30 or
E36 cars. Up in the engine bay both the M20 and the M50/52 engines have
fuel pressure regulators. They are nothing but very expensive ($60+)
membranes that serve to stabilize the fuel pump's output by relieving extra
fuel pressure into the line that goes back into the tank. Nothing too
exotic.
