Re: sick E36 M3

Alex-
Not sure if this is true on BMWs or not, but on some cars I've worked
on the tach is actually fed from the alternator. So a flaky
alternator causes the tach to jump around or die (on some cars).

The fact that it dies when hot or on hard right turns (but not left)
also sounds like a very tough to find problem I saw once. Car would
die going down hill. Would not start. Get it level, or let it cool
off, and it would run fine. Turned out to be a bad coil. The fluid
in it would short only at certain angles, and only when hot, but
would run fine otherwise. Lack of spark sounds like your 'loss of
power.'

Wild speculations, as both of these experiences were with other
makes, not BMW. -Bob
