E46 M3 "Clunking"

I took a recent European Delivery on an M3 Coupe, drove it there for two
weeks, and am impatiently awaiting its arrival here in southern
California.  While driving it in Europe, I experienced a driveline
clunking sound when shifting in and out of first gear.  From the
driver's seat, I couldn't pinpoint where the sound was coming from.  Is
this the differential noise that I've read about in past threads?  Have
they found a fix for it yet?
