tire issues

As Octoberfast at Road America is approaching, I
am starting to rethink the wisdom of my intention
to use my current set of tires. I have a 1994
325i with 16" OZs that are currently running
225/50 Z-rated Dunlop D40 M2s. The tires have at
least 25k on them, but the tread still appears
decent and they feel fine. However, the left
front has a plug. Would it be idiotic to use the
tires at a two-day track event where I expect to
see heaving braking, cornering, and speeds in the
140s?

If the answer to that question is yes, which I
suspect it is, any recommendations for a good
high performance tire that is reasonably priced?
The tire rack is giving Yoko AVS Intermediates
away, but I hear the tire is being discontinued.
I am thinking of Yoko A520s or AVS ES100s (seems
new), or Dunlop SP Sport 8000s (look just like my
D40 M2s). I would appreciate any recommendations
for the above or other suggestions. I don't want
to spend much more than $100/tire.

Are the Kumho 712s any good?

Thanks,

Ryan Braithwaite
