What do you mean 'stuck'?
I can understand the "does not work" part. The single most likely cause of
that is low pressure switch detecting low R12 charge and killing the power
to the compressor to prevent it from self-destructing.

I don't buy the 'frozen from lack of use' diagnosys.
If the AC is not working there is something broken. A good wrench will
identify and remedy the underlying problem.

You mean the 5-er?

Seriously now, ask around within your local BMW CCA chapter for a good AC
wrench and have him pressurize the system and check for leaks. That should
cost you 1 hour of labor and about $24 for 2 pounds of R134a.
If you have a leak, ask for a parts/labor quote on what it takes to repair.
Shop around if you do not like what the quote adds up to. If there is no
leak you will have a suddenly unfrozen functional AC system!
