Sorry for not replying to your first message -- if my
response now helps, then it will have been worth the
second!

It's been a while since I've done this on my now departed
E28, but I recall that the trick is that it only works on
a single specific display.  My recommendation is that you
run through each of the displays, trying the button on
each.  I recall that it was either the fuel economy or the
average speed display that did it, but I could be wrong.
