Automatic shift cable, 84 7331

To the List,

I have an '84 733i, Auto trans. Went out to leave for work and the shift 
lever is not shifting the trans. It just slips right along. Looking 
underneath it appears to be ok on the tranny end so the problem must be at 
the shift lever. I can not figure out how to get the console off (or even 
if I need to do so) to get at the upper end of the cable. On my 5 series 
you can just (gently) pry out the cover to gain access. Does not appear to 
be so with the 733 and do not want to force the issue.

Can anyone give me a clue how to get to this end of the shift cable?
