RE: E36 emissions

Not likely...the tests are conducted at an optimal cruise rpm and speed
(40 - 60kph up here..)

Since you didn't include any of your readings, i'll take a stab at it;

change oil and check coolant and system and test coolant sensor, inspect O2
plug (Fuel traces in oil are bad as well as faulty engine temp sensors could
send an inaccurate signal to the ecu, thinking its still cold.)
check charcoal canister filter? (i did have an instance where it was so
saturated with fuel, as well as having a faulty purge valve introduced a
rich condition.)
check spark plugs and coil paks!!!!....(how does the car run?Does it burn
oil?)
run diagnostic on o2 sensor
remove any modified chips that you have installed
check air filter and replace if nessesary


take the car out for a real hard run for about 20 min or so and immediatly
do a retest.

My '92 325i failed the emissions for having a high HC from unburnt fuel.
The
O2 sensor, plugs, coils, are only 6 mos old.  What else could it be?  I did
notice that the technician must have accidentally put the AC on!  Could the
fuel enrichment from the AC cause it to fail?
