Re: <E30> rough running/stalling problem

Kyle,
May I offer two "usual suspects" for all of your drivability problems,
especially below 4K rpms and double so under cold running conditions:
1. The ICV (Idle Control Valve) and its brain if you are driving an eta
car. The ICV is notorious for going intermittent and sticking in closed or
opened conditions causing all sorts of drivability problems. Sometimes they
clear after the engine warms up. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes an
intermittent ICV will pass all Bentley resistance checks, other times it
wont and you will identify the problem and replace it. Long story short,
start by giving your ICV a healthy WD40 bath. Take it apart to do so. If
that helps - congratulations - you've identified the culprit and know what
to do the next time. If not, do get a spare used ICV from a junk yard for
<$50 and swap it in.
2. The DME, or the ECU or the Motronic brain. It always goes intermittent
before failing and stranding you on a side of the road. It's not cheap
>$250 used, so eliminate all other problems before getting a spare.

good luck,
alex f

my '87 325iS is running a bit rough under load between 2K and 4K rpm. it
feels like its missing. it idles OK, and it still has good power at WOT.
then today as i was backing out of a parking space the car stalled. i
would
have the car in reverse, give it throttle & let the clutch out a bit to get

moving slowly, then put the clutch back in. the engine would blip up to
~1200
rpm, then stall on me. it did this three times. once i got the car moving,
it
didn't stall again.

i checked the things that came to mind when i got home: cap and rotor are
OK,
plugs aren't fouled, no vacuum leaks that i can see. in tank fuel pump and
fuel filter are 6 months old. im wondering if my air flow meter is on its
way
out. has anyone had similar problems that were solved with a new AFM? any
help is greatly appreciated.
