Tripping the lights not-so-fantastic

Have spent the past year paying inordinate amount of attention to lights
in my 1988 528e's dashboard. As Rosanne-adan-adanah (sp?) used to say,
There's always something!
 
Most recent development runs like this.
 
Start car. 
Antilock and Battery lights on together.  
Restart.  
Check engine light on. 
Restart. 
No problem.
 
Does anybody recognize this sequence?  Doesn't always happen.  For
instance, while it happened this morning, car started up fine this
p.m.(well, had to cancel the flashing Check lighgt, but otherwise.)
 
All input greatly appreciated.
