Norm,
AFAIK none is required. You could use some if you are so inclined. 
The last four times I swapped water pumps (three E30s and one E36) I did not
see a need nor used any sealants. Keeping the glue off the gaskets also aids
in future water pump replacements which are rather frequent on the E30s
(every t-belt change).
