It sounds like the previous owner *did* have a penchant for smokey burnouts.
I have been through three sets of tires on my 325is and never had a huge
difference in tire wear from front to rear. While I don't have the extra
50hp that your M3 does, I drive quite hard. It is also possible that you
have a rear alignment problem. Since it is new to you, it would not hurt to
have it checked by a reputable shop.
