Thanks for the comments on this.

It was the thermostat, frame fatigued and broken. The
old plastic pump impeller was fine (80k) but the
bearing was loose and showed signs of leakage. Neat
design on this pump.

The thermostat housing is plastic and looked "etched"
on the wetted areas. What year's have a metal housing
that's interchageable?
