I've heard the life of the factory water pump is about 60,000 miles. The
symptoms of failure are usually a change in operating temperatures: the car will
seem to take forever to warm up (thermostat stuck open), run hotter (thermostat
or water passage blocked).

There was a good write-up of this in the Roundel a while back in the Tech
column. You could check the BMWCCA website for more information--though I don't
think the column itself will be posted.
