Did my detail place ruin my wheels?

I had my 95 740i detailed 3 months ago after buying the new BMW Star Spoke
70 wheels for the car 3 months before that (the wheel they are using on the
2002 740i's). I had always been able to get the inside part of the wheels
clean with elbow grease and P21S spray. Now, after my detail place last
detailed it, putting on the Sonax Motorcycle wax I'd given them to make it
easier to clean the wheels, it is impossible to get them clean in the inside
part that shows so well when looking at it. It's this black and brown
residual crud that won't come off, no matter how aggressively I scrub it
with my towels or sponges. I confronted my detail place (they're supposed
to be the best in town) and suggested they put too harsh a cleaner on them
and it took the clear coat off making it impossible for me to clean them
thoroughly. They of course said, no way Jose. They said that nothing they
use is that abrasive. What should I do to get them clean, now?!? The
outside part of the wheel is no problem. It's just that inside part that's
closest to the rotors.
Thanks in advance.
