E28 - fuel system problem?

hello,
wondering if anybody has been down this road before:

ive got a '87 535is that cuts out at crusing speed...
with no warning the rpms suddenly drop down to idle. 
at this point, although the engine will idle,
increasing throttle results in choking, sputtering,
stalling, etc.  ive discovered that if i manage to 
get the rpms way up near the red line for a few blasts
by pumping or shutting down and re-starting with the
acc pedal floored, that clears the problem and i can
drive on.  until the next hour/day, when the problem
re-appears.

i intend to go through the bentley manual trouble-
shooting charts this weekend, but first i thought 
id ask if anyone here has solved a similar problem,
and maybe save myself a lot of time and frustration.
