I have a cooling system problem with my '95 318ti.  The car has 80k km (50k
miles) and during some recent very cold weather (I live in Canada) one morning
it started to make a very annoying whining sound.  I thought it was just belts
- - the whining is in tune with engine RPM.  However, within a few days I
noticed a coolant smell inside the car.  I checked the overflow reservoir and
found not a drop of coolant in it!  I topped up but the noise remains and so
does the smell.  There are no leaks that I can find but the coolant level is
dropping slowly...  I really don't want to spend $1,500 on this car at the
moment.  If it's just the water pump (even though it shows no signs of leaks?)
I can do it myself but can it be that the car needs a head gasket?  Any help
would be appreciated.
