'86 535i electrical quirks

My girlfriend's '86 535i is giving occasional "low beams" check signals on
the overhead warning light system--both low beams are working. In addition
to this warning, the instrument cluster illumination lights, the head lights
themselves, and the instrument cluster "brake", "park brake", and "battery"
lights fluctuate in brightness regardless of engine speed--quite random,
actually. The "low beam" check light and the cluster/headlight dimming don't
always necessary coincide with one another, either. I don't think it's
concerned with the alternator, since that warning light hasn't been going
off, and the car has been starting without a problem. Can anyone tell me if
they've experienced this, and what I should be checking out besides grounds
and fuses? Any input is appreciated.
