...only 3 ft/lbs more then its single vanos predecessor while the weight
went up by 231 pounds.

E36 328is  3120 lbs  190@5300     206@3950  
E46 328is  3351 lbs  193@5500	    206@3500 

That's a 1.5% increase in torque pushing 7.4% increase in weight.
