Extended Oil Changes - 1st one on new motor

Dean,
  For what it's worth: I'm very hard on my cars, and up until the last two
weeks I was living in Austin, TX driving 15 miles each way to work. My M
roadster went about 8,000 miles until the oil change indicator clicked
on.  I've just gotten the car back from Inspection I (the 2nd oil
change) at a little short of 18,000 miles. (And yes... in 11 months my
Roadster acquired 18k while visiting TX, AR, LA, AL, MS, GA, and
FL. If it hadn't of been winter I would have driven it out to Oregon too!)  
  My service department guy has told me it's based on the amount
of gas you burn in total, more than on mileage per se (which does somewhat
jibe with my extremely heavy right foot).  I'm somewhat unsure of the
scheduling myself... I even went so far as to try and track down a
magnetic oil drain plug only to be told that BMW doesn't make one.  At
this point, I just have to assume that they know more about building these
motors than I do...
