Rear end noise

Greetings and happy holidays to all,

I'm getting a whine from the rear end of my '84 325e with the five speed.  I'm
wondering what the collective wisdom is about the likely prognosis.  I haven't
been able to pinpoint the problem, other than it is in the rear end housing.
I had the drive line rebalanced a few months ago and am wondering if there is
a connection or if its pure coincidence.   Any input would be highly
appreciated.
