Black Smoke E34 525i

Hi all,

My fuel consumption on my E34 525i M20 seems to be a little high and there
is a slight indicaiton of
black smoke coming out of the exhaust with lots of carbon deposits. Does
this mean I am running
the engine a little too rich?. Normally in the morning when I first start up
the engine, idling is a little
rough and thats when the black smoke is the most obvious then as the engine
heats up, less smoke
is visible and idling goes smooth. Any ideas or should I be concern about
this?
