E36 climate control problems

I have an 1995 325IS.  The climate control fan switch (0-4 positions) appears
to be going bad.  Positions 3 and 4 always work but the others intermittently
don't work.  Any ideas as to where to begin troubleshooting?  Also, when I
have the dash lights on, the lighting on the climate control will flicker or
go off for short periods of time.  Is this related or something else?
