Correction; I meant e32. I just sold my e12. But I do think this is likely
your problem. Hydraulic replacement did not fix this for me.

I believe that your 535i has the same clutch linkage as my e12 735i.
I also had the same problem with the pedal staying on the floor, which was
traced to wear on the knife-edge pivot of the booster spring assembly. The
whole assembly is under $20. I was also experiencing excessive friction
during operation, making a smooth departure hard.
