<E28> Rich running when cold??

See if this makes any sense. My 88 M5 acts up a bit when started cold. Always starts fine, but until temp gauge gets out of blue, car will hesitate and then surge some. As gauge climbs out of blue, car accellerates without moving the gas pedal. Once warm, no problems, idle seems fine too, warm or cold. Interesting
thing is it is worst when it is WARM outside - when it is in the 30s or 40s, doesn't seem to happen. So I'm thinking, maybe it is running rich. I pulled a plug and there appears to be dry carbon deposits (not really heavy). I occasionally think I am smelling some gas as well. Could it be that either cold start valve or
thermo time switch is bad? I am thinking that thermo time switch may not be shutting off the cold start valve until engine is warm. It supposed to
last about 8 seconds, and then an internal element heats up and opens switch. I'm thinking that maybe the switch doesn't open until coolant is warm enough to open it. Does this make any sense?? Any comments much appreciated.
