Jay, I would recommend against doing it yourself. Here at the shop we offer paintless
dent removal services also, and let me be the first to say that the quality of the dent
repair depends first and foremost on the experience of the person trying to remove the
dent! It is very much an art form. There is a whole slew of specialized tools that PDR
people use to go around corners, reach in tight places, etc. in their quest to "smooth
out the dent" from behind. You might be able to get it to look "okay" on your first
try....you might push too hard from behind and turn an "innie" into an "outtie"....but if
you're an anal perfectionist (I sheepishly admit to being one) then I'd say just fork
over the $50 and have the guy do it.
Its not something that you can get right on the first try...
When a new PDR guy starts training, "homework" goes something like this....
"Here. You need to practice. You see this hood (off of a dismantled car)? Let me
take this old sock and put a golf ball in it."
<WHAP> <WHAP> <WHAP> <WHAP> <WHAP> <WHAP>
<WHAP> <WHAP> <WHAP> <WHAP> <WHAP> <WHAP> !!!!
"Now this hood has a LOT of dents in it. Fix them all tonight and
show me in the morning!" And this is _in_addition_ to all the formalized
training classes the guys take!
Hope this helps.
