Rear End

Can anyone tell me about diff swaps?  I have an '87 535is.  I have the
proverbially clunk and then some.  When I turn a rear wheel with the car on jack
stands, it take about a quarter to half turn for the other side to move, and
then there is a pretty good clunk, even just hand turning.

I would like to rebuild the original (useful tips there are appreciated), but
will need one to run in the mean-time.

'87 535is-K&N, Sharked, new bottom end, 5 spd trans rebuilt.
(She ain't pretty, but she's pretty fast!)
