The plastic impeller was used 'til around 1995. Odds are against the
stock plastic pump living this long, but I have seen the occasional one
make it. If you have any doubts (and there is no external way to tell
which pump you have) replace it ASAP! Go with a factory BMW pump as most
of the aftermarket pumps I have tried leak or generally suck. They are
pretty cheap (~40$) so it's mainly the labor if you have it done. Also
do the belts, flush the coolant, & change the thermostat while in there.
You may want to change the fan clutch too as they do wear out.
