I am getting intermittent brake light warnings from my 1982 528e.
The actual bulbs for the brakes lights are okay. Any ideas on what
gremlin might be causing this?

My bet is the brake light switch - above the pedal.
The contacts wear inside and then the arching gradually causes them to
fail - first sign is the warnings you are seeing.
Put in a new one (not expensive).
