As the brake pad wears, it eventually reaches a thickness equal to that
of the brake pad wear sensor.  When the pad exceeds the thickness of the
wear sensor, the sensor begins to wear down; bringing the strike plate
closer to the brake rotor.  Eventually the metal strike plate on the
sensor will make contact with the brake rotor, and thus result in
illumination of the warning lamp.  Early on you'll only notice a flicker
when you apply brakes, but once the sensor has reached a certain level,
the contact plate will remain against the rotor, and the light will stay
on.  Hope this helps.
