E28: Rebuild Tranny?

My 88 535i's auto tranny, according to a transmission repair place, needs 
rebuilding with a $2,300 price tag.  The question: is the price right? where 
can I get a refurbed tranny for much less dough?   Digest-ers with 
experiences are welcome to contact me.  That's a lot of coin, but then again, 
the car has only 120K miles -- is this a good investment?
