I highly recommend the 16" x 7.5" Mille Miglia (MM 11's)...5 spoke alloys 
with 225/50/16 Z rated tires (Dunlop SP8000's are great, and reasonably 
priced).  A friend of mine has a similar setup on his '87 535i and it looks 
great...he also lowered the car with H&R springs and Bilstein 
Sports....handles and rides great.

I believe he bought the wheel/tire package from The Tire Rack (very 
reasonable).
