Both systems are merely efforts to minimize one of the many
compromises inherent in tuning engines. There are a variety of
factors
(power/driveability/efficiency/emissions/durability/cost/etc.) that
must be considered when designing and building an engine, and each
manufacturer uses different solutions to achieve their objectives.
While it is an interesting exercise to debate the technical merits of
each subsystem, it is best and most satisfying to evaluate each
powertrain as a whole.
On that count, both BMW and Honda can be counted as part of the upper
echelon in terms of engine design prowess.
If BMW's research into electronically-actuated valves ever reaches
fruition, it will render both VTEC and Vanos obsolete.
