VANOS vs VTEC
Why does Honda use Vtec, while bmw uses Vanos?
In several road tests, I have noted that the VTEC engine gives results
equivalent to VANOS, or other comparable system, but that the VTEC car
gets 1-2 more miles per gallon.
Some of this may be due to the reduced engine weight of a motor that
makes its power with less displacement, and some may be due to reduced
pumping losses at part throttle with VTEC. Recall that Honda also uses
VTEC on their ultra-efficient models.
So I would surmise that mileage is less of an issue in the more expensive
BMW line, allowing the use of technology that gives a more relaxed motor.
OTOH, Honda has a strong corporate committment to efficiency; 600cc cars
and $4 a gallon fuel are the rule in Japan.
