E36 - On Board Computer

I just purchased a '95 325i (E36) with almost all the options I
wanted. The only thing missing from my list is an On Board Computer. I
have a '88 325i with an OBC and I love it.
My questions to the collective wisdom of the digest are:
Is it possible to install an OBC on an E36 if not installed at the
factory?
What would it happen if you remove the existing clock/information
display and replace it with an OBC? (Same connectors?)
Are there extra sensors required (fuel flow?) etc. required?
Have someone else already done this or looked into it?
The alternative would be to actually build an OBC using the signals
available for other devices in the car (speed, etc.) with a micro to
recreate most or all of the features of the factory OBC. Perhaps someone
may have done this too. Since I do not want to re-invent the wheel, I
thought I would bring this to the digest for some light on the subject. If
no one has, I guess I have one more project to do. In this case where one
could gather information on the existing signals such as number of pulses
per wheel rotation, etc.?
Thanks
