Transmission Help

I am consider buying a 86 735 that has serious transmission problems.  It
reportedly only drives in reverse.  Does this mean the tranny must be
replaced?  Does anyone have one laying around?  Is the tranny compatible
with a 5 series?  Cost?  Shipping cost to Hawaii?  Thanks
