[e30] bouncy tach

Please help,

I have an 87 325es with a tach that seems to stick around 2,000rpm.
 Sometimes it will work correctly and sometimes it will not.
 If I ligtly hit the console then it will seem to "bounce" or
"jump" and then go to the correct spot.  Has anyone had this
issue and fixed it?
