Mike,
Sorry to take a week to respond.
Anyway, I'm not sure what your problem is, but I was having similar adjustment
problems with my "tonneau cover". One mechanic suggested that I needed to
replace a "control arm", but it looked like it mostly needed for the
cables to be tighter to they would pull the tonneau down tighter. I can't
see why you cable would slip through, unless:
1) the "plug/end" of the cable had come off, and the cable is not held at all;
2) the threaded adjustment "screw" had come off, and nothing was holding the
cable; or
3) the nut on the adjustment screw that "locks" it into place is not there (or
not tight) and it just slips in.
It's amazing how much like a simple bicycle brake cable this is!
If I can be of further help, please send me a more detailed eMail of your
problem.

Hi all,
I know nothing about adjusting the soft top. There is a cable that looks
like a bicycle brake cable w/o the housing that runs from somewhere in the
rear forward along the window seal on each side of the top. There is a
small metal arm (tab?) which grabs the leading end of the cable a inch or so
back from the windshield header on each side.
My driver's side one keeps coming out. It still has the head on the end of
the cable. Should I crimp down that metal tab in an attempt to hold the
cable end better, or is something else wrong? I really can't tell by
looking at the other side. It looks like the cable is being out the "top"
of the tab as the top is raised and lowered (this will probably only make
sense to you if you go out and look at the one on your own car). This top
has been replaced once (supposedly professionally), so I could be dealing
with a not-so-great installation.
Any tips or requests for clarification so I can then get a tip would be
greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike Olsen
