Like it has been said, it is hard to squeeze more hp in an engine that is
already very well engineered. It is easy to boost +100hp in a Ford 5.0l or a
chevy 5.7l but BMW engines are already build to the max (for day to day use).
The only thing that could be done for a daily car (some $$) would be to replace
the pistons with lower compression, 8.5 9.0, and install a turbo, intercooler
and chip. I know that already tuned kits are availables for the M42,M44 4 cyl
engines still keeping the 10:1 compression ration, boosting the ~140hp to
~190hp.
Or if you need only once in a while, momentary hp boost, go the easy, low
engineering approach and install a +50-75hp NOS kit!!
